Blogtober 3 – Ten for Tuesday – Books for October

I’m back to posting 10 for Tuesday with 10 awesome books for your reading pleasure in October.

A Night In the Lonesome October – Rodger Zelazny

I love this book so much. This very quick read told from the perspective of a dog that just might belong to Jack the Ripper includes a who’s who of Victorian gothic literature as two sides vie to determine the fate of the world on Halloween night.

Something Wicked this Way Comes – Ray Bradbuy

Another quick read that will take you back to when childhood was all adventures and terrors wrapped together when an evil circus comes to town. It has one of the best action sequences I’ve ever read.

Also look for: The October Country and The Halloween Tree

Sunglasses After Dark – Nancy A. Collins

This is the first vampire novel I fell in love with. Sonja Blue was my literary crush in my early 20s. She’s a badass with a silver switchblade. A special kind of vampire who hunts other vampires.

Anno Dracula – Kim Newman

What if Count Dracula won at the end of Dracula? What if he became the prince consort to Queen Victoria? What would London look like then, and how might that shape Jack the Ripper?

The Balad of Black Tom – Victor LaValle

We read this for Reading as a Contact Sport last year, and we all loved it. It’s a re-imagining of Lovecraft’s “The Red Hook Horror” from the perspective of a Black Man. It’s chilling, creepy, and compelling.  This novella is one to fall into some afternoon this month.

The Last Days of Salton Academy – Jennifer Brozek

This is Night of the Living Dead meets Lord of the Flies by the uncrowned queen of horror. Jennifer Brozek will scare you right down to the depths of your soul.

Malus Domestica – S. A. Hunt

A YouTube star with a reality show of hunting witches that is more real than anyone expects. This is a hell of a fun ride.

All Hallows Eve – Charles Williams

Start with C.S. Lewis, move on to J.R.R. Tolkien, then graduate to Charles Williams, possibly the greatest of the Inklings. He perfected the art of blending the natural with the supernatural. This was Williams’s last book, a ghost story like no other.

Many Restless Concerns – Gayle Brandies

This novel in verse from the victims of the Countess Bathory who killed hundreds of women in her mad scheme to remain young and beautiful forever is as chilling as it is beautiful.

Halloween Jack and the Devil’s Gate – M. Todd Gallowglas

Of course I was going to list this one. Y’all should be reading this one every October. And tell your friends to read it too!
