NaNoWriMo is Coming

We’re just a week away from November, and many writers across the world are gearing up for National Novel Writing Month. (Though I should be International Novel Writing Month, since it’s kinda exploded across the globe.) I’m going to give it a go this time around, so I can work on one of the various projects that’s been bouncing around in my head. The problem is, I can’t decide which project to work on. Sooo… I’ve decided to let y’all pick for me.

Without further ado, here are the three contestants (in no particular order):

GODSHARD

Set in a Roman Empire-esque fantasy world, where the empire digs up the fossilized remains of fallen gods and transforms these into alchemical mixtures and bond them to people with secret equations that give mortals god-like powers. Sometimes these mixtures bond with the subjects so thoroughly that the process cannot be reversed. In such cases, the affected mortal becomes property of the empire. Valius was a soldier who suffered such a fate. Years after he and his fellow warriors all became bonded during the same battle, a battle none of them can remember where they were the only survivors, they escape, and seek to run beyond the reach of the empire. They also hear of a fabled golden godshard that may free them from the curse and blessing they have received. GODSHARD is part Spartacus, part Les Mis, part Blood Diamond.

SHANDI’S WAR

Shandi and her half-brother train to fight every day, waiting for the day when the Fomyrii break through the armies protecting the human frontier lands. Their father has gone off to war, as have most of the men of his generation. Shandi is a half-breed, her father a human, her mother was Danu, a race borne the elements and only a few generations before, slaves to humans. While coming into her own a young woman, Shandi must deal with the prejudice of the people in her town, learn to control the magic of her Danu blood, and try not to think about how every new day may bring news of her father’s death. Shandi’s War will set the stage for the Wyrd Frontier stories, in a world that’s part Dark Tower part Sons of Anarchy part Tombstone.

NOBODY WANTS FLOWERS WHEN THEY’RE DEAD

Kal (Kalaedios to his teachers, and Margrave Stefanidos dela Olyreo at official functions) wants nothing more that to suffer through his classes at the Academy so he can go back to his father’s lands and enjoy his life until such time as his older brother assumes their father’s title and makes good on his promise to cast all his younger brothers of the family estates. Then, as Kal is smoking his pipe on the roof of the astrology building in between classes, he sees the fleet of ships with their red sails enter the city’s harbor. Ignoring commands from the Maestros, Kal sees the confusion as a perfect time to sneak off into the city and enjoy himself during the confusion brought on by these strange visitors. During his adventures and misadventures in the city, Kal meets a mysterious young woman who changes everything. This one is Harry Potter if Harry was Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye, with a healthy dash of Roman Holiday.
