Keep Your Petition Away From Our Art
THIS RANT HAS SPOILERS FOR TOY STORY 3 AND POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3.
I just saw that Change.org has a petition going trying to affect the end of the How to Train Your Dragon movies. The point of the petition is to have DreamWorks studios keep Hiccup and Toothless together at the end of the trilogy. It’s based on comments that writer/director Dean DeBlois has made that suggest that Toothless isn’t going to be with hiccup at the end of the next movie.
This pisses me off to no end.
People need to suck it up and let DreamWorks tell their gawdam story, their gawdam way. But noooooo… To many people are all, “boohoo. We’ll be so sad if Hiccup and Toothless split up. You’ll ruin the movies if you separate them at the end.”
Guess what! You don’t know that.You don’t know what the writers, who have been brilliant so far, have in mind for the end. You’ve loved the movies thus far, loved them enough to get this petition going. Trust these brilliant film makers to continue being brilliant. And thank god that this change.org thing can’t possibly affect the script, because if it could, the results could be catastrophically lame. Separating Hiccup and Toothless might be absolutely the most perfect way to end their story and anything else might be a sugar-coated saccharine cheese fest of fail.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I give you TOY STORY 3. Woody and Andy get separated at the end. Thank all the gods that ever were that they did. The end of TOY STORY 3 was one of the most emotionally brilliant endings in cinematic history. If you can watch TOY STORY 3 and keep a dry eye, you are not human. It is bettersweet and beautiful. It was the perfect way, the ONLY true way to end TOY STORY saga.
Based on the track record of the first two movies, I image HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3 to have the same level of impact. I expect to weep bittersweet tears, and I’ll love every moment of it.
Allow artists to do our thing without trying to muddle things up, making assumptions that you can’t know anything about until after you experience the art. After all, we don’t come to your jobs and try and tell you how to do them, especially when you do your job as well as the creators of HTTYD have been doing theirs.
So please, pretty please, pretty FRAKKING please, keep your petition away from our art. Too many people involved can really screw up a good thing. As example, I’ll close with this MEME of “Run the World” vs. “Bohemian Rhapsody”
