Blogtober Post #4

Sunday mornings I meet a friend, Brian C. E. Buhl at a Starbucks for coffee and writing. We banter some about what we’re working, stories we’ve seen and read recently, and get some writing done. Today I worked on the new “Exploration of Craft” class and my new thoughts on protagonist archetypes and how those archetypes apply to story structure. Bantered with that a bit with Brian, and he gave me some interesting things to consider. The musings about this are a little over 24 hours old at this point. I’m excited to see where this goes.

After Starbucks, I took Megan to a birthday party. During the party I got some reading in on the three Textbooks for “Exploration of Craft” – How Two Write a Sentence and How to Read One by Stanly Fish, Steering the Craft by Ursula K Le Guin, and Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose. Over the next week, I’ll be figuring out the fiction and poetry readings with each lesson in the class.

Sunday afternoons, I usually get quite a bit of writing done before my Hapkido class in the arboretum at UC Davis. Traffic after the birthday party was bad due to an accident and so I got there later than I normally do. I only got part of a letter penned.

Two things I forgot about on Friday…

First, after Hapkido, a few friends and I go to have Thai food. It’s our regular thing. We have a few drinks and dinner right at the bar. At one point, I struck up a conversation with a young lady next to me. She’s a new Ph.D. candidate in some Earth science subject, but she also wants to write science fiction. And our conversation was off and running. I gave her my card as she departed to join her friends with her newly-acquired drink. Later, I went to the restroom and overheard her excitedly talking about the author she’d just met and that he was awesome to give her his card. Pretty sure she didn’t realize I was behind her. That moment made me smile.

Second, WWE Smackdown moved to Friday nights on Fox. Huge spectacle!  Some really good moments. Some things I fast-forwarded through. The storytelling gave way to glitz. This week AEW was my favorite wrestling show, followed by NXT.  I have a feeling AEW is going to change the game of storytelling in wrestling. Can’t wait to see the ripple effects.

This next week is going to be SUPER busy. Looking toward it with equal parts excitement and dread.
